With a contribution from the Institute of Materials Science, the second research symposium "safeND" for the safety of nuclear waste disposal was held from 13-15.09.2023.

The paper explains ideas on an efficient concept for final repository container development for heat-generating, highly radioactive waste in view of a site selection procedure in which different host rocks are considered and thus also very different requirements are placed on the container technology. This work at the Institute of Materials Science is part of the research project TRANSENS (Transdisciplinary Research on the Disposal of High-Level Radioactive Waste in Germany, 02 E 11849A-J) and the disciplinary research project ElaBeMa (Research and Description of Materials to be Considered for the Repository Container System, 02 E 12092). Organised by the Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BASE), the interdisciplinary event with topics from the natural sciences, engineering, social sciences and humanities, including workshops and discussions with opportunities for exchange on issues related to the safe handling and disposal of radioactive waste, took place at Café Moskau in Berlin.
