Welcome to the Institute of Materials Science
Only cyberspace works without materials.
In real life and for any functioning economic system, modern materials and their corresponding production techniques are indispensable prerequisites. This important dependency is shown in the simple fact that three of the most important eras of human development were named after their dominant materials: the Stone, Bronze, and Iron Age.
Nowadays, mastering modern materials is the main condition for many production engineering companies in order to survive in the global market. This is, however, a real challenge, since the variety of materials and the speed of their further development have increased drastically in recent years.
The Institute of Materials Science of the Leibniz Universität Hannover, founded in 1905, is not only actively involved in basic research, but it is also a mediator to interested companies between materials research and their applications. Therefore, we offer services in the areas of development, testing, and consulting.
In addition to research, teaching is the second pillar of our institute. Particularly, we provide guidance to students from the fields of mechanical engineering, production engineering and logistics, biomedical engineering, metal technology, mechatronics, and industrial engineering, to whom we offer numerous lectures and laboratories for their bachelor and master programs.
On our website, you can find information on the different activities of the institute, as well as suitable contacts to answer your questions about research projects, teaching, and our offers to the industry. We look forward to working with you!
