Mechanics and Materials in Medicine

i) Importance of engineering mechanics and materials science for medical devices; (ii) Case studies on the use of mechanics and materials science for medical devices (e.g. surgical instruments and implants); (iii) Perspectives of physicians and engineers; (iv) Design philosophy for medical devices to achieve optimal solution.

The module uses several examples to demonstrate contributions from mechanics and materials science to the solution of medical problems. Upon completion, students will be able to: (i) use knowledge from mechanics and materials science for the development of medical products, taking into account the biological limitations for application in the human body; (ii) know state-of-the-art solutions for medical problems; (iii) develop creative thinking for interdisciplinary tasks; (iv) critically evaluate the latest research results from mechanics and materials science for the development of new medical products.

As part of the lecture, compulsory design tasks are set during the semester to consolidate the course content.
