Investment Casting

The investment casting process is being further developed in order to, for example, be able to manufacture filigree and open-pored implants from resorbable magnesium alloys in a near-net-shape. Such implants serve as temporary placeholders in the case of removed intervertebral discs or for filling larger bone defects, which can be used for corrective limb surgery, for example. The challenge lies in process development to produce defect-free, high-quality cast implants with optimal microstructural properties.
