High-frequency ignition is used to generate an electric arc between an electrode and the workpiece or a cooled nozzle, which consists of electrically conductive ionized plasma gas at a temperature of around 30,000 °C. The design of the outlet nozzle and a suitable layout of the gas flow form the plasma column which heats the material. The open-circuit voltage of the plasma sources is up to 400 V, the working voltage is around 150 V.
